How to put your motorcycle into winter storage

Good preparation keeps the battery, fuel system and tyres in order. In spring you can ride straight away.

Preparing the bike

Do these steps before the bike goes into storage.

Wash and dry

Salt and dirt eat paint and metal over the winter. Wash the bike and let it dry fully before storage.

Lube the chain

Clean and lube the chain so it does not rust over the winter.

Fill the tank

A full tank holds less air and moisture. On a carburettor bike, drain the float bowl or add fuel stabiliser.

Look after the battery

A battery that stands drains. Keep it on a maintenance charger or remove it and charge it during the winter.

Inflate the tyres

Inflate the tyres to the correct pressure. Standing on low pressure can leave a flat spot.

Change the oil

If an oil change is due soon, do it before winter. Used oil can harm the engine while it stands.

What to ask a storage place

Storage places differ in price and conditions. Ask about these before you book.

Is the room warm and dry?

A cold, damp room causes condensation. It makes connectors and brakes rust.

Is the site guarded?

Ask if there is video surveillance and who can enter the room.

What does the price include?

Ask if battery charging, washing or an inspection is included or costs extra.

Who is liable for damage?

Ask about the storage place's liability. Check your own insurance terms too.

Minimum period and VAT

Compare the monthly price together with the minimum period. Ask if VAT is included.

How does the bike get there?

If you cannot ride the bike there, ask the transport price both ways.

When to store your motorcycleOur motorcycle storage

In spring, before the first ride

After a long stand, check these things.

Tyre pressure

Tyres lose pressure over the winter. Inflate them before you ride.

Brakes

Check the brake pads and brake fluid. Take the first stops gently.

Battery and lights

Charge the battery fully. Check the headlight, tail light and indicators.

Chain and fluids

Lube the chain and check its tension. Check the oil and coolant levels.
